Angus John Bruce was born in London, England in 1945. Bruce studied engineering and worked as a design engineer in Yorkshire, England. He moved to London to study sculpture and painting at The Central School of Art and Design. In 1973, Bruce emigrated to the United States and began working in New York City. He established his own company, AJB Aesthetics, specializing in interior design and custom furnishings.

For more than four decades he has been an innovator in the field of design. Known for his highly expressive, handcrafted and limited edition work. Bruce was a pioneer in the field of multifunctional furniture and loft design. He went on to design and build his own home on the water in the Hamptons. Elements of his early loft design, open air setting and custom furniture are featured throughout the home.

Bruce opened a gallery in Soho, New York in 1982, featuring his work and a variety of collections by other artists. Between sketchbooks and plein air painting, Bruce developed a unique style. Early color paintings were of large scale and fields of color. He incorporates his early draftsmanship disciplines to produce deep perspective visual landscapes with plein air sensibilities.

As a painter, Bruces’ work is recognized for creating an interplay among light, line and color. As his art has evolved, his use of depth and visual perception is seen throughout several pieces featuring landscapes from around the world. He is known for capturing an atmosphere and having a simplistic, effortless technique that transports each viewer. His work reveals his love for each place he paints.

In his latest series, Bruce focuses on the landscapes from the Caribbean, a very dear place to him that he knows and loves. Currently, his series, Gates of Terres Basses is showing in St. Martin.

Bruces’ work has been publicly recognized and featured in New York Times Magazine, Metropolitan Home, House Beautiful, Best Bets, Vogue and House & Garden Magazine.

He continues to work and live in Sag Harbor, NY.
